He was Assistant Lecturer in history at Reading U from 1919 and subsequently combined the duties of a lecturer and tutor with those of librarian. His exceptional success in reorganizing and building up the Sheffield U service was crowned by the erection of a new library which was, however, not opened until three years after his retirement. He edited several volumes for the Lincoln, Northamptonshire and Oxfordshire Records Societies.
